365 Days Photo challenge | Day 10

Hey Photographers! Today is the day 10/365 Days Photo Challenge!

Photo Tip #10

WTF is depth of field!?

You have probably already heard phrase depth of field but do you know what it means and how to create it in your photography? Let's start from definition. Depth of field is the distance along the optical axis of the lens between two planes in the space of objects, within which objects are displayed in the conjugated focal plane subjectively sharply. Seems complicated? In simple words, this is when we strongly emphasize the object in the foreground, showing that it is very close to us or technically speaking, the object in the foreground is in focus and the background is very blurry. You may see depth of field on portrait photography when the face of a person always in focus and the background is so blurry that you can't even recognize what is there.

Now the best part how we measure depth of field? Super simple the more blurry background is the stronger depth of field!

Now let's see some of my shots before I'll explain how to take pictures with depth of field.

Photo Examples After/Before Editing:

Pretty cool, right? Now let's see how we can create this effect! First you should know the wider the aperture (smaller f-number f/1.4 to f/4), the shallower the depth of field. On the contrary, the smaller the aperture (large f-number: f/11 to f/22), the deeper the depth of field. Another factor that affects depth of field is how close to shooting subject you are. The closer the stronger depth and vice versa!

Therefore if you want to create cool depth on your images you should follow two simple steps:

1. Widely open your aperture.

2. Come closer to the subject.

3. Focus on your subject.

Don't limit yourself creating depth only on portrait photography, you can create depth on any photo, with any object anywhere!

If you don't have a camera but have a smartphone, I got some good news for you! You can create some nice depth too! Unfortunately, you cannot adjust aperture on your smartphone but it has a built in algorithm which allows you to create depth on shots.

Everything you need to do is:

1. Come closer enough to the subject.

2. Tap once on the screen to focus on the subject.

Sometimes phone works even better than camera since it's smaller and you can get closer!
